The academy of family medicine is the first in Southeast Asia, and Malaysia is the first country in Southeast Asia to introduce it. The academy of family medicine will offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees as well as a two-year residency program. The school will offer a three-level training program, with the first level being an intensive course that students can choose to do after their MBBS, which they must complete before they start the second level. The Malaysian Academy of Family Medicine aims to create a professional workforce that is ready for today’s challenges and future trends in family medicine. Malaysia’s Academy of Family Medicine is the first in Southeast Asia and was established by the Government in 2014. The academy trains family doctors to provide medical care for patients and children, as well as to help improve patient outcomes by developing quality healthcare services.

The academy currently has six departments: Department of Family Medicine, Department of Pediatric Family Medicine, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Department of Anesthesiology, Department of Surgery and Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. The academy also offers a program that is open to any Malaysian citizen or permanent resident who has graduated from a medical school outside Malaysia or is currently studying outside Malaysia.  The Academy of Family Medicine Malaysia is the first medical school in Southeast Asia and the sixth in the world. It was established by Dr. Zainal Abidin Ahmad, who is also its first president. Dr. Zainal Abidin Ahmad created a school with a mission to educate students from around the world and give them a chance to work as doctors all over the world using their skills and experience globally.

The Academy of Family Medicine was established in Malaysia by the Ministry of Health and has been recognized by the World Health Organization. The Academy has been set up with the objective to produce internationally-recognized family physicians and is endorsed by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. The Academy of Family Medicine in Malaysia is the first in Southeast Asia and has been a pioneer in research and development. The school was established with the aim of meeting the needs of family medicine specialists through education, training, research and service. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach which is aimed at achieving health for all by providing medical care for children, adolescents and adults.

The academy’s vision is to produce skilled family medicine physicians who are knowledgeable about health promotion, disease prevention, health system strengthening and national policy. Malaysia has invested in the development of a school-based approach to teaching family medicine. The Academy of Family Medicine is the first and only center in Southeast Asia that specializes in this area and will offer training for new specialist doctors. In Malaysia, there are four medical schools that focus on family medicine. They are the University of Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia majoring in Family Medicine.
